The Ottawa AV Summit 2018 will be held on Wednesday April 4, 2018 at the Brookstreet Hotel in Kanata, Ontario. The Kanata North Business Association and Invest Ottawa in partnership with CAVCOE have created a program with an excellent range of speakers covering technology, transportation trends, government policy, insurance industry planning, and Ontario's AV Innovation Network (AVIN). The final program for the Ottawa AV summit and a registration page are here. It promises to be a very informative day with lots of networking opportunities. Thanks to our many generous sponsors, the full 1-day conference is only CAN$129 including breakfast and lunch.

The April issue of AV Update will include announcements and other highlights from the conference.

On 18 March, an Uber test vehicle in autonomous mode hit and killed Elaine Herzberg in Tempe AZ while she was pushing her bicycle across the road. This is clearly a tragedy and our condolences, thoughts and prayers go to her family.

In the days following, more details have emerged regarding the cash:
- Uber voluntarily suspended all of their AV testing on public roads;
- Uber was officially suspended by Arizona from AV testing;
- Velodyne the makers of the LiDAR, stated that their technology would have been perfectly capable of seeing the pedestrian;
- Waymo categorically stated that their self-driving car would have avoided the pedestrian, and
- Uber has reached a legal settlement with some, but not all of Elaine Herzberg’s family.

At CAVCOE we continue to remain concerned that approx. 1.25 million people are killed on the world’s roads every year, and nearly 2,000 every year in Canada. We firmly believe that AVs have the potential to significantly reduce this ongoing global tragedy, but we also know that the path to realizing the deployment of AVs that are acceptably safe will not be an easy one. We therefore hope that the discussion and regulation development around AVs at this time will continue to move forward in a positive way, balancing the immediate needs for public safety, with the ongoing need to address the unacceptably high societal cost of human-driven road crashes.

AV Demonstrations
We are seeing increasing levels of interest in demonstrations and pilots of AVs. They are clearly the best way to show and experience the reality of this new mobility solution. Because it is so new to the market, organizing such a demonstration is not an easy task. There are many inter-related issues and stakeholders that have to be considered.

Decision makers in both government and the private sector have many questions about AVs. Many people want a better high-level understanding of how it works and the impact it will have on traditional mobility solutions and other business models.

Working with someone who has experience on deployment is key to the process of such a demonstration. An evaluation is made for every pilot; every one of them need to be analyzed and evaluated. There is no such a thing as a "standard process", although the various demonstration have some similar elements. Past experience in organizing AV demonstrations provides a solid understanding of the lessons learned and best practices. This provides the key knowledge required to develop a plan that addresses the various challenges associated with organizing demonstrations.

Identifying all the different stakeholders and their priorities is an important piece of the process. New mobility solutions are of great interest to many people and groups, transit authorities, corporations and government agencies who want to be involved in these type of projects in order to better understand the technology and vehicles. Knowing who to talk to and the chain of communication is a constant challenge. Political implication, social acceptance and industry stakeholders are just some of the people who need to be involve in the project. The stakeholders will understand and be reassured when they learn about past experiences, best practices, and the various steps of the process to make the pilot very successful.

Demonstrations and pilots are a major element in the development of AV technology  Success at this stage will improve the outcome in commercial deployment. We recommend working with a team of experts that will be able to guide the process and coordinate all key stakeholders.

Marie-France Laurin, Senior Associate, CAVCOE, organized five Canadian AV demonstrations in 2017.

AV News
Waymo called a press conference in New York City to announce its partnership with Jaguar Land Rover with a view to designing and engineering “the world’s first premium electric fully self-driving vehicle, built for Waymo’s transportation service.” The intention is to add up to 20,000 Jaguar iPace vehicles to the Waymo fleet over the next few years – “enough to drive about a million trips in a typical day”. In addition to a commercial AV service roll-out in Phoenix AZ, Waymo also stated in a National Automobile Dealers Association panel discussion  their intention to deploy in a second market later this year.

From CNBC: “The University of Waterloo in Ontario is to partner with two Chinese institutes to develop research into connected and autonomous vehicle technology. The Canadian university recently signed an agreement with both the Qingdao Academy of Intelligent Industries (QAII) and the State Key Laboratory for Management and Control of Complex Systems (SKL-MCCS).”

“Research will focus on everything from automated vehicle testing to deep learning in automated driving and applied artificial intelligence. A "shared research center" for automated driving will be set up while faculty and graduate student exchanges are also in the pipeline. Additionally, Chinese start-ups could potentially set up research and development facilities in the Waterloo region.”

“The Chinese institutions will together provide as much as CAN$1 million (US$764,200) annually for five years, while Waterloo has committed to supplying CAN$4 million to build an autonomous lab facility. All institutions will also look for funding from outside sources.”

From Electrek: GM has announced that it is investing $100 million into upgrading two factories to start making the production version of its self-driving Chevy Bolt EV for its upcoming driverless ride-sharing service to be launched next year.

The automaker has claimed to “be ready to mass produce self-driving Chevy Bolt EVs,” the electric vehicle they used as a platform for their self-driving Cruise AV since September of last year with the third generation of the vehicle.

They made the announcement after having completed the first batch of 130 Chevy Bolt EV autonomous prototypes at its Orion Assembly Plant in June. Now they are investing into that plant as well as the Brownstown plant to start producing the production version of the vehicle.

Dubai (Reuters)  “Dubai has begun testing autonomous pods in a trial run the Gulf’s trade and tourism hub hopes will help its transformation into one of the smartest cities in the world.” “Officials from Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) displayed two cube-shaped vehicles built by U.S.-based Next Future Transportation company in Italy as they spun around on a main street in Dubai.”

“RTA officials said they have allocated 1.5 million dirhams ($410,000) for further research and development of the vehicles, which Dubai hopes to use for local transportation under the city’s 2030 Dubai Future Accelerators, which aims to make 25 percent of daily transportation self-driven.”
